Trent McCarthy

Councillor for Darebin City Council - South West ward

I’ve loved serving as your Greens Councillor since 2008.

I put forward the world’s first Climate Emergency Declaration in 2016, building on our community’s commitment to think global and act local.

Since then, over 1,700 cities have joined us! We’ve doubled solar in Darebin, helped over 1,000 low-income households reduce power bills and switched 47 councils to renewable energy, creating new jobs and funding for community services. Thank you for inspiring this – you made this happen. Working together, we’ve secured funding for the new Merri Creek bridge and playspaces at Batman Park, Robinson-Capp, Swain, Turner, Newman and Woolhouse Reserves. Soon, we’ll get a playspace at Mayer Park and other improvements as part of the new masterplan.

I want to increase your free access to our precious green spaces, including Northcote Golf Course and Merri Creek. Imagine a new forest on our doorstep! I started the Darebin Nature Trust to ensure Council invests in our natural environment and makes developers pay their fair share. Council is now committed to planting 100,000 trees, plants and grasses to restore bushland, support wildlife and provide cooling during heatwaves.

As a community, we secured the reinstatement of trees along St Georges Road. There’s still more to do, including safety improvements to protect road, tram and path users. We’ve won lower speed limits on many local streets, making it safer for kids to walk or ride to school. I’ll keep fighting for safer crossings and better paths. I’ll also keeping fighting for our local businesses. I want to see them create jobs and thrive.

I’m a parent at Bell Primary, community representative at Coburg High and coach my daughter’s Darebin Falcons soccer team. While these are challenging times for many, I’m committed to working with you to build back greener, fairer and better. Thank you again.
