Trent on Council

I’m into my third term on Darebin Council representing Rucker Ward, which covers Northcote and parts of Fairfield, Alphington and Thornbury.

For nine years I’ve been standing up for our community, which I love being part of. Together, we’ve achieved some great things. Here are some highlights:

Development

  • Stronger planning controls and maximum height limits
  • Fighting to protect our neighbourhoods from overdevelopment
  • Campaigning to ban developer donations to councillors
  • Stronger rights for residents, and greater openness and accountability

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People

  • Working with Aboriginal leaders to tackle racism
  • Pushing for the federal seat of Batman and Batman Park to be renamed
  • Aboriginal traineeships with council

Climate change

  • Australia’s first government Climate Emergency Plan
  • Rooftop solar scheme for low-income households at no upfront cost
  • Energy-efficient street lighting
  • Subsidised solar hot water scheme

Arts

  • Protection for live music venues and artists’ studios
  • Expanding Darebin Music Feast across the munipality
  • Making Northcote Town Hall a hub for the Melbourne Comedy Festival and Midsumma
  • Arts worker hubs to support local creative projects and enterprises

Environment

  • Establishing the Darebin Nature Trust
  • Clean-up program for Merri and Darebin creeks
  • Funding the plan to protect our bushland and waterways
  • Safeguarding our open space
  • Saving the Alphington station railway reserve

Business and employment

  • Opening up vacant shopfronts for local artists – a national award-winner
  • Green business strategy and green-collar jobs
  • Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Employment program

Diversity and inclusion

  • Adding sexuality and gender to council’s diversity and inclusion policy
  • Identifying and eliminating discrimination in council services
  • Working in partnership with LGBTIQ groups such as Rainbow Families Network

Safer streets

  • Pushed for 40km limit on sidestreets – now being implemented by Council and VicRoads
  • Backing residents to get trucks and rat-runners off their streets
  • New pedestrian crossings and school crossing supervisors

Health and wellbeing

  • Support for community groups to prevent violence towards women
  • Backing for a 24hr community medical centre
  • New all-ages and all-abilities playspaces across Darebin
  • Creating community gardens at Northcote Library and All Nations Park
  • Support for vulnerable residents during heatwaves

Sports and Recreation

  • Record investment in facilities to increase women’s participation
  • Establishing a new multi-sports stadium at John Cain Park
  • New netball courts and improvements to lighting and grounds
  • Upgraded facilites at Mayer Park, Pitcher Park and John Cain Park

Cycling and Walking

  • Building more cycle paths and dedicated lanes
  • Tripling council’s cycling budget
  • Making cycling Council’s priority for local trips
  • Improving walking paths

Animals

  • Greater protection for native wildlife
  • No Local Extinctions policy
  • Commitment to Darebin becoming a “no-kill” municipality
  • Working with animal rescue groups to establish a new No Kill Shelter in the north
